Abstract: The novel tells a broad and detailed account of life in a closed rural community and depicts the mental development of the young and emancipated heroine, Emmy Woodhouse. She is rich, educated and well-mannered, but also overconfident. Living in a peaceful environment has not yet refuted her naive notions of her own infallibility. When she then decides to interfere in the fates of the people around her, she will have many unpleasant surprises. But in the end, she learns from her mistakes and discovers what is really important to her.
