Abstract: Captain Marlow tells the story of Jim, who worked on Patna as the first officer. One day, on a rainy evening, Jim discovers a serious defect on the ship. With a view of the inevitable crash of the Patnu ship, the captain and his crew will leave and leave the passengers surely dead. The crew is then found by the Avondale, which rescues her. For Jim himself, however, this act means an indelible sin, for which he is later stripped of his rank by the court. But Jim is more worried that he cowardly left the ship and left its passengers to die. Driven by guilt, Jim tries several opportunities for a new life. Eventually he ends up in the small Malaysian settlement of Patusan. There he finds a company that accepts him as his protector, where Jim is really happy. However, he is torn from this calm by the arrival of a pirate called Mr. Brown, who kills several Patusan men, including the son of the Patusan leader Doramin, Dain Waris, in an unsuccessful attempt to conquer the settlement. Jim realizes that his sin is and has always been indelible. Having guaranteed his life for Dain, he goes to Doramin for certain death, his liberation.
